If you dread the thought of going to work each morning and can’t wait for 5 o’clock to come so you can get out of there, then you either need to win the lottery or create a working environment that makes you feel comfortable in your surroundings and motivated by your work. Some people are fortunate enough to do something they love for a living, but most just have to make the most of their job and try to enjoy it as best as they can. Here are some tips on what you can do to create a good environment for yourself to work in.
If you are given the choice of where to sit in your office, then it is important that you choose the right location. You will want to choose an area that is private but does not isolate you from others. Sitting directly beside the printer or the door will make you feel constantly interrupted and the same old small talk that you go through with each passer-by will end up making you want to hide under your desk. Find an area that is still within reach of everything you need yet also gives you the privacy you want and a sense of your own space. Sitting by a window can be great in the summer but a nightmare when the winter drafts are hitting your neck, therefore you should try to find a happy medium.
If your work area looks exactly the same as everyone else’s, then it is understandable that you may start to feel like just another cog in the wheel and so it is important that you create a sense of personal identity. Surrounding yourself with motivational images or funny items will bring a smile to your face each day and remind you that there is a whole world outside the office and that whatever drama you are faced with doesn’t seem so important in the bigger picture. Pictures of loved ones will raise your spirit and morale and give you a reminder why you’re earning money in the first place.
Having the right lighting may sound trivial but when you are working in an office environment it is essential that you get it just right. Working in a dark room will cause your mood to become equally dark, while sitting by a window that causes constant glare will leave your head feeling like it’s about to explode.
There is no surer way of your morale hitting rock bottom than coming into a desk that is stacked with papers and documents that have been flung around in no particular order. Having a clear and coherent working area is just as important for your mental outlook on your days’ work as it does to your ability to carry out your duties. If you know exactly where everything is, then you will feel confident in your ability to do your work and you won’t get that sinking feeling when you arrive that today’s going to be the day when it all gets too much.
Being comfortable in your office is vital for your general health and well-being as well as helping you to do the job to the best of your ability. Make sure that you treat yourself to a good office chair which will prevent you from damaging your back and make you feel comfortable. Having your computer screen at the appropriate height will also help you focus on your work without damaging your neck or eyes. We spend a large portion of our lives at our work stations and so it only makes sense to make them as comfortable and pleasant as possible.
