Medical Transcriptionist Job At Home

Home sweet home! How many of us would have cursed pausing at different stoplights, driving through erratic crowd, dust, heat and sunshine while commuting to and fro office? How many of us would have got irrigated by the crawling traffic at various traffic jams traveling back and forth office? How many of us would have craved to have a work-at-home job? Yes, in the field of medical transcription, one can swipe off the above curses and utilize the tremendous advantage of working from home, i.e., home transcription.

Pros and cons of home transcription

Pros:

  • Flexible working hours.
  • Free of those annoying commutes to and fro the office.
  • More working hours as you save traveling time, thereby more earnings.
  • You’re available for your family anytime. Eves can take care of homemaking and kids along with work.
  • You can wear the clothes that you are comfortable with.
  • Less restrictions.
  • Stress free because of the above-said points.
  • Free of those office politics.
  • One tends to develop more of an entrepreneurial mindset than of an employee.

Cons:

  • Distractions: TV, kitchen appliances, guests, kids, rest of the members of the family, other visitors like direct marketing folks, phone.
  • Lethargy/lazy being at home.
  • May miss the current scenario unless one gets deeply involved in discussions with people of same field.
  • The payment being production based, tendency to overwork would spring in.

Can I become a home transcriptionist?

You certainly can work from home, provided you are well experienced and confident of handling work independently to meet the requirements of the employer and have an intense urge to learn and update your knowledge and keep improving. Many MTs have benefited from this option and are doing well at home. The documents a medical transcriptionist produce are healthcare related, there is no room for error and should be strictly confidential too. So anyone stepping into home transcription will be rigorously screened and you cannot directly start your medical transcription career as a home transcriptionist.

Since pros outweigh cons and if you are self determined enough to overcome these cons, then home transcription would be the ultimate choice than working at an office/hospital provided you have adequate backup for power, internet, computer peripherals etc. It would also be interesting to read the article “The positives and negatives of working from home on the internet” before you begin with.

It is a tough job unless you have some solid contacts there in the US, may be close relatives, friends etc., as the people onshore are extremely reluctant to outsource due to various obvious reasons including reliability, quality and TAT concerns, especially when you’re trying for a home-based job.

Contract work from any of the medical transcription companies in India if you’re experienced for more than two years.

Alternatively, if you’re less experienced, work at one of the MT companies nearby you for a short period of time. Once you’re accustomed of the procedures, express your interest for working at home and walk out with a home transcriptionist job. However, in this method, the per-line rate will be that of Indian rates, but no choice.

I am experienced Mt. So how can I get rate per line in US rates. How can I procure a contract from companies in india which pay in US rates. If any other alternatives?

    Thanks.

I don’t think you have an option for that sitting in India. Medical transcription companies operate from India purely due to the profit margin due to the difference in currency exchange rates and cheap labor. So do you think that they will buy and sell jobs for the same rate?

So either get a contract with your solid contacts in the US if you want your pay in dollar terms or settle for a less remunerative contract in Indian Rupees with an Indian company. To my knowledge, no medical transcription company in India pays in the US rates. If you come across one such, kindly let me also know.
