I remember my good old days as a construction engineering student struggling to standardize the units and measurements of weights, areas, volumes, lengths, speed, power, mass and so on to SI units (
International System of Units) though I was equipped with a scientific calculator. I was an average student in mathematics and not that extra brilliant to perform those calculations instantly mentally. The only other alternative than memorizing those conversions, especially those metric conversions with umpteen zeros, is to carry the printed standard tables along with me. I used to have a wish on those days (or even nowadays though I work as a medical transcriptionist) whenever I need to convert some measurements and units to have a calculator-like tool that would do the job for me with just the strike of a few buttons or a few clicks on the mouse. I got that dream realized today when my brother forwarded me one such tool “Convert” as an email attachment, just a cool little toy with which you can convert almost all the units that you need in your daily routines instantly with just a few keystrokes. What he mailed was an outdated version of 1996 and after googling, I was able to trace out the current version, its download location and the author’s site.

Convert is a free and easy to use unit conversion program that will convert the most popular units of distance, temperature, volume, time, speed, mass, power, density, pressure, energy and many others, including the ability to create custom conversions! No registration needed. No strings attached. Neither a malware nor a spyware. The best thing I liked with it is that there is no need to install it on my computer, it’s just an exe file, if I don’t need it, just give a shift+delete, though an installable version is also available. It is compatible with Windows operating systems from Windows 95 onwards and Linux/Unix or anything that runs WineHQ.
It is still missing some units like radiological conversions and micro units like milli, micro, nano, etc., in some units and macro units like kilo, mega, giga etc., but still okay to a great extent with the available version.
