Neither you need to be computer or Internet savvy nor any “formal” academic requirements to become a medical transcriptionist exist. Even you do not need to know typing to enter a medical transcription course. All these skills can be achieved over a period of six months to one year. All you have to do is to get trained to suit the requirements before you start working as a medical transcriptionist. Medical transcription training can be obtained through schooling, certificate/diploma programs, on-site training offered in some hospitals or even distance learning. It does not mandate registration or certification too. Individual MTs may seek certification for personal/professional reasons.
I have compiled a list of medical transcription courses and training programs, you may check it out if you opt for medical transcription career.
The national transcription companies in the US usually require an experience for about one to five years in a hospital or course completion from reputed institutions before you are put into an entry level opening. While in Indian healthcare BPO companies, one will be trained anywhere between six months to one year and then put into post-training trial period for about one year before one is independent.
Irrespective of how one is through the medical transcription courses, whether it is from an online course, college, healthcare BPO center, or on-the-job training in a doctor’s office or hospital, a quality oriented, knowledgeable medical transcriptionist is highly valued.
It is a world of constant learning. A medical transcriptionist is constantly challenged to learn in a very exciting occupation with interesting, ever-changing subject matter. There are always new medications, new procedures, previously unstudied specialties to learn, and new doctor-specific phrases and accents to master. Your career as a successful medical transcriptionist lies in your intellectual ability to cope up with these challenges everyday.
